What’s the Best Version of OS X for My Mac?, Ian R Campbell, The Sensible Mac, 2008.02.28. Which version of Mac OS X is best for your hardware depends on several factors.

May 12, 2012 A G5 can use OS X up to 10.5.8. For that matter, most all retail versions of OS X, 10.4x Tiger can be used in a G5. A possible exception would be a pre 10.4.2 OS X retail version in a dual core, Late 2005 G5, which would require 10.4.3 or later. In 2003 and 2004 G5s, retail OS X, 10.3.9 Panther can be used. I have a Power Mac G5 Dual 1.8 with 3.5GB of ram running 10.5.8 The system feels so slow though.:( Taking in mind that this was a beast back then, which would be the best OS X version I could i.

Notice: This program doesn't work right. You use it at your ownrisk. It works on certain Power Macs in certain configurations but notothers for reasons I don't fully understand yet,and will not work on any Intel Mac or 10.6+, even under Rosetta.

As our Power Macs age, it's good to keep an eye on their operatingparameters to make sure they're staying in spec, andsometimes you'd rather do that with a simple tool instead of havingiStat or Temperature Monitor running all the time. So here's that tool.Tower Power Mac OS

When you start it up, a quick summary displays in your menu bar, updatedapproximately every 10 seconds:

The quick-status display indicatesthe highest temperature currently detected on the CPUsensor(s) and the highest RPMs currently of any of the fans (orthe liquidcooling pump on liquid-cooled G5s). QuickFans will detect the fan speed andtemperature for most software-exposed sensors on most Power Macmodels, including and up to the Quad G5.

As a bonus, you can use QuickFans' internal PPCFanTool to also get thisinformation from the command line. If you installed it to/Applications/QuickFans.app, go to Terminal.app and type/Applications/QuickFans.app/Contents/Resources/fans. To get a completelist of sensor data, type/Applications/QuickFans.app/Contents/Resources/fans -v. Here's whatan example quad G5 might looklike (this is an example, not intended as actual data):

Please note that older G3 and G4Macs may not have software-visible sensors and the tool will notify you('No sensors') if no data is available. QuickFans does not yetsupport accessing S.M.A.R.T. temperature data; if this is available fromyour hard disk, Temperature Monitor can usually display this information.

QuickFans is freeware under the FloodgapFree Software License. It is only tested on 10.4.11, butshould run on 10.5.8. This tool only functionswith Power Macintoshes.
